If you spend hours at work on your feet, or they’ve recently been subjected to damage or strain, then a foot soak might be just what they need. In honour of Chinese New Year, January's self-care freebies will be a wee bit of origami :-) Originally a Japanese past time, the art of origami is an excellent creative outlet that anyone can use to help reduce stress generated by life challenges such as exhausting work schedules, or demanding family circumstances. 'Sand Art is something that isn't just for small kids, big kids find it amazing too! During a recent event I had some older kids feed back to me on how soothing they felt it and I was so pleased. This unique craft isn't just for fun, the health benefits are there too. Working on fine motor skills, sensory play, imagination & colour stimulation as well as the soothing mental relaxation it brings once you have to start thinking how you want your creation to look like in the end is something unique that can translate over so many ages. Being someone who's more visual, seeing creations come to life and the reaction of someone once they have created something is certainly amazing. I started out wanting to just share something that was kid fun, however the benefits and joy it brings to all comes out and a joy to see. Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. They can be used as a self-help strategy to promote self-confidence and belief in your own abilities and when you repeat them regularly and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes.
These simple statements help shift your focus away from perceived failures or inadequacies and direct your focus toward your strengths — those you already have and those you want to develop. By creating a mental image of yourself doing something, it activates many of the same brain areas that actually experiencing these situations would. Therefore, regular repetition of affirming statements about yourself can encourage your brain to take these positive affirmations as fact.

Where are our gardening fans?
With the warmer weather beginning to set in, many people will start to plan and plant their gardens. Did you know though that this favourite summer pastime is also a great form of self-care? To start, gardening offers a sense of responsibility. It requires us to look after other living things and can help foster care for nature and all living things, especially in children; what a great opportunity for bonding and quality time together too. Gardening also allows all of us to be nurturing and kind - plants have no preference for who is taking care of them and contributing to a transformative activity helps boost self-esteem. This is because we get to see first-hand the transformation that our plants go through from seeds to fully-grown plants. Watching this helps instil a sense of nurturing and accomplishment that we made that happen.
Group gardening can keep us from becoming too insular as well because it focuses on collective skills and aspirations as opposed to individual symptoms and deficits. Finally, working in gardens releases happy hormones; dopamine and serotonin!

Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity! It seems easy enough to say that you love yourself. But the truth is, many disregard what they need to be healthy and happy in order to support others. Remember the classic saying ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup’? The act of continually making “you” number two may cause harm to your own well-being. Many are likely to suffer from increased levels of anxiety and depression when neglecting their well-being for others, or when making sacrifices to achieve specific goals. So put you first on your to-do list.

The act of colouring can reduce stress and have a calming influence. Instead of allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by the things that are causing you stress, you can set them aside and take an art break. It can reduce stress responses and heightened states of panic, as well as be a productive outlet. It can often be hard to focus while meditating or sitting still so why not incorporate colouring into your mindfulness routine to keep your hands busy while your mind focuses in. Colouring can help replace negative thoughts with positive ones and If you want to give your drawing to a friend or family member with a note of support for them, it could be an act of kindness that makes both you and them feel good too. Sometimes we all need to just take a quick break from being adults and colour. Creating art the good old fashioned way with pencil and paper offers a respite from the call of technology; especially when life gets stressful, colouring can be a great way to get in touch with your inner child and unwind.
